First flooding. Then fighting with insurance companies for full and fair payments for insured losses. Then dealing with contractors to make sure work is done timely and correctly. But now Louisiana flood victims have to deal with a new problem.
The Louisiana Office of Community Development is warning residents of possible scams of flood victims. Evidently emails and telephone calls are circulating claiming that flood-impacted families have been approved for grants. It seems that these could be efforts to scam personal information.
The Office of Community Development assured residents that every homeowner participating in the Restore Louisiana Homeowner Assistance Program will be contacted through phone calls, texts and email messages. When contacted by phone, the Restore Louisiana staff will confirm a homeowner’s survey account number. The state says to compare this number to your survey account number before giving out any personal information. Residents who are unsure of the authenticity of a phone call or email can contact the Restore Louisiana program at taskforce@restore.la.gov or the call center at (866) 735-2001.
Louisiana flood victims have been through enough. They don’t need to be scammed during this stressful period. So be careful.
