J. R. survived a house fire as a child. In fact, he turned nine in the hospital. So he knows the importance of fire safety. J. R. partners with local fire departments and shares his experience surviving a house fire to teach children fire safety. He also gives television and newspaper interviews to share what to do if you find yourself in a house fire. He has donated smoke detectors and other materials to local fire departments during National Fire Safety Week. As a thank you and as a recognition of the heroism of the firefighters who saved his life, J. R.’s family provides scholarships to children of firefighters every year. This scholarship is named in honor of his brother, Brian, who helped save J. R. and his parents from the house fire.

In addition to his work with firefighters, J. R. serves on a nonprofit board dedicated to helping young men aging out of the Louisiana foster care system. J. R. and his wife are also involved in efforts to end human trafficking.

In addition to this work in the community, J. R. writes for various publications, including The Legal Examiner and Living Safer, educating consumers about important public safety issues. He also regularly speaks to attorneys. In fact, based on his experience and expertise, J. R. was asked to speak to lawyers a number of times after the Great Flood of 2016 to help educate those lawyers about how to best assist victims of the flood.
