WBRZ reported a fatal motorcycle crash happened Tuesday, March 20. The incident was reported around 8:15 p.m. in the 1000 block of Nicholson Drive. The crash involved an SUV and a motorcycle. Sources tell WBRZ the driver of the motorcycle lost control, veered into the other lane, and crashed into the SUV.
If you ride a motorcycle, you already know how much fun riding can be. But riding a motorcycle can also be very dangerous. The latest vehicle mile travel data show motorcyclists are about 27 times as likely as passenger car occupants to die in a motor vehicle traffic crash and 6 times as likely to be injured. According to Louisiana State University Highway Safety Research Group, Louisiana had 96 fatalities due to crashes involving motorcycles in 2017. 40.6% of those fatalities involved alcohol. Overall, Louisiana had 1392 people injured or killed due to crashes involving motorcycles in 2017. These motorcycle accidents generally involved people between the ages 20 to 29.
Louisiana law provides that all motorcycles are entitled to full use of a lane and no motor vehicle shall be driven in such manner as to deprive any motorcycle of the full use of a lane. Most motorcycle accidents are the result of inattentive car drivers rather than the individual mishandling the motorcycle. Most motorcycle accidents we see involves a motorist switching lanes without seeing the motorcyclist or turning onto a road and cutting the motorcyclist off. We urge everyone to share the road and be alert, and we’re reminding motorcyclists to make themselves visible, to use DOT compliant motorcycle helmets, and to always ride sober.
Because motorcyclists do not have the afforded protection that a car provides, the accidents usually result in severe injuries. Common injuries include: road rash, bone fractures, head injuries, and spinal injuries. These serious injuries can result in numerous surgeries and long recovery times.
